Julie Brunskill is
a ceramist working in South Wales, UK.
Julie studied at Cleveland
College of Art and Design from 1976 - 1981.
She moved to Wales in 1983 and soon became a member of the Swansea Branch
of the Association of Artists and Designers in Wales. She established
a studio in Swansea's Maritime Quarter in 1986 and has been based there
since.
Julie has had numerous exhibitions in Wales and other parts of Britain
and several public and private commissions. The largest public commission
was for the Hastings Hotel Group in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1991
and '92.
After taking some time out, having had two children, She is now returning
to her own work. Her children brought her into contact with schools and
since 1998 she has taken ceramics workshops with Primary schools.
Past work was mostly based on her childhood in the industrial North East
of England. Later on some of the more dynamic forms were based on cranes
in Belfast Lough where she lived for some months while Artist in Residence
at Stranmillis College.
Julie's recent work is more contemplative, based on cuboid forms with
holes / windows to look through / out of the meaning is ambiguous.
The work is made mostly with white earthenware clay with occasional forays
into other clay bodies. Forms are decorated with inlaid oxide stained
clay and sandblasting.
